The Inaugural Carhenge Mural Fesival

Each year, on the Summer Solstice, the ACD will host eight artists to paint the eight cars that make up the inner circle of Carhenge to create a curated show that will remain on display all year at the famed roadside attraction.

Carhenge is a replica of England’s Stonehenge made with vintage American cars. It lies on the western edge of the Nebraska Sandhills(recenty recognized by Atlas Obscura as one of the The Five Best Places Our Readers Want to Go in 2025).

From June 18-21, the Alliance Creative District will host eight artists to paint murals on selected cars of the Carhenge roadside attraction. Lodging, per diem, and supplies will be provided.

Work Size:

Each artist will have a designated car to paint with the expectation that they include coverage of the exposed hood/windshield/roof in their design. The cars will be assigned via draft process with selected artists. The average area per car is 24 sq. feet. Upon design approval, paint and supplies will be provided by the ACD and on hand during the week of painting.

Compensation:

Each artist will be paid $2500.00 for participation in the event.  Food, lodging, and travel stipend will be provided. While accommodations will be available for artists to paint from June 18-21, artists are only obligated to attend the artists’ dinner on June 20, to complete their assigned car by 4 pm, June 21, and to attend the reception that evening. An additional $1000.00 will be paid to artists who hold a workshop during the event.

Entry Requirements:

Artists will submit a Submission Document for review that will include a cover letter with contact information, resume, vision statement and up to 4 images of original art. Interested artists are also encouraged to submit a brief workshop proposal (2-3 hours for 15 people). Artists who hold workshops will be compensated an additional $1000.00 for their efforts. While workshop participation is not a requirement for the artists the ACD is committed to engagement and outreach and may prioritize artists who align with those goals.
